For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a child version of Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements this season, the significance of the encounter was first explored the live show The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, which triggered the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict that awaits.
