UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
