When I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
