The nation's defense cabinet has voted to recognize the recognition of nineteen fresh communities in the occupied Palestinian territories, signaling a sustained push for settlement expansion.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who proposed the move together with Defense Chief Israel Katz, declared that the decision was intended for blocking the formation of a Palestinian state.

According to global statutes, Jewish communities in the occupied West Bank are deemed unlawful.

The announcement has drawn condemnation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has commented that Israel's "persistent" settlement expansion fuels tensions, restricts Palestinians' use of land, and jeopardizes the prospects of a independent Palestinian state.

Rising Tensions and Political Fallout

Clashes in the region has surged since the hostilities in Gaza erupted in October 2023, adding to fears that the growth of communities could solidify Israel's occupation and damage the chance for a two-state solution.

The two-state solution refers to the formation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, roughly along the borders that existed prior to the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Since taking office in 2022, the incumbent Israeli government has greatly accelerated the approval of new settlements and initiated the process of legalization for informal settler outposts, designating them as "suburbs" of existing settlements.

Ongoing Growth

The most recent decision brings the overall count of communities approved over the past three years to sixty-nine, per the figures from Minister Smotrich.

These decisions are announced a short time after the United Nations reported that settlement expansion had reached its most intense pace since the year 2017.

The most recent batch of approvals encompasses the rebuilding of two communities — Ganim and Kadim — which were removed about two decades ago.

Earlier this year, the Israeli government authorized twenty-two new settlements in the territories - described as the biggest expansion in many years.

Additionally, the Israeli government gave the go-ahead for projects last summer to build more than three thousand homes in the so-called E1 corridor between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement, a project that had been on hold for decades amid strong foreign opposition.

Regarding that plan, Smotrich remarked it would "put to rest the idea of a Palestinian state."

Population Facts and International Reactions

Approximately seven hundred thousand Israeli settlers live in approximately 160 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israeli monitoring organization Peace Now. This is territory that Palestinians envision for a future independent state.

This ongoing construction has provoked Arab states who have consistently argued it harms prospects for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has also raised concerns about the possible formal annexation of the disputed territories.

Ex- US President Donald Trump had once cautioned the Israeli leadership about such a move, telling a publication that the country would lose all its support from the US if it proceeded.

In a policy change, the United Kingdom - together with other countries such as Australia and Canada - acknowledged a Palestinian state, a notable although primarily ceremonial change in government policy.

Israel opposed this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a Palestinian state "is off the table."
