LA Battles Unprecedented Heat Just Days After Severe Winter Weather.
Following a week of torrential rains that led to inundation across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with abnormally high conditions for late February.
Record-Setting Heat
During the day Friday, the temperature soared to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in the city center, according to meteorologists. This breaks the old record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on NWS charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
The weather service cautioned that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
An Extreme Shift
This dramatic increase in heat arrives just after a intense winter storm that pummeled the region last week. That system unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, causing evacuation orders for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the conditions also caused a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
Forecasters predict some relief is expected. The heat were predicted to decrease to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city by late Friday.
Other locales that hit the 90-degree mark were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to see the high 80s.
Over Saturday and Sunday, central LA can expect temperatures in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the following week.
