US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.
